Right: FACE (Free Air CO2 Experiment) site at Duke University was one of the first large-scale manipulations of CO2. The CO2-releasing rings form areas where air CO2 concentration is higher. Scientists compare ecological measurements taken inside and outside these plots to study the effects of increased CO2. FACE measures CO2 increase, but other global change experiments might examine other predicted changes, using shelters that exclude rainfall to study drought or chambers that increase temperature to study effects of warming.
